So... what is wellbeing, really?

Children show positive wellbeing when they are connected, calm and confident, curious and capable, engergised and healthy. Wellbeing is a good life feeling. When children are doing well in these areas, they're more resilient, make better choices, and grow into confident humans.

Fact

The World Health Organization refers to wellbeing as a positive state in 4 areas: Social, Emotional, Physical, Cognitive (but for children in CP3, we like saying the above instead!)

Connected

Social wellbeing is shown through meaningful relationships and community connections.

Calm & Confident

Feeling aware of emotions, and confident they know what to do when the road gets bumpy.

Curious & Capable

Cognitively engaged and feeling confident in what they can do.

Energised & Healthy

Physical wellbeing, feeling good through food and moving their bodies.

How do I know if a child is doing OK?

Think of wellbeing like a battery—you want to keep it charged with connection, safety, and opportunities to grow.

Engaged Play

They enjoy play (alone or with friends).

Emotional Expression

They express their emotions—even the tricky ones.

Resilience

They bounce back from upsets.

Trust & Safety

They trust adults and feel safe.

What can I actually do to help children feel good?

Here's your mini CP3 "Wellbeing Toolkit" — pick what works for you and your OSHC service.

Try This Why It Works Real-Life Example
Make routines predictable Kids feel safe when they know what's coming "It's nearly time to pack up. What's one thing you want to finish?"
Start with a smile + a check-in Builds trust "Hey Jordan, you look thoughtful today. What's on your mind?"
Teach calm-down tricks Helps children self-regulate "Let's do 3 balloon breaths together" 🎈
Add play that sparks connection Boosts social and emotional wellbeing Run a team challenge like "build a marble run together"

How can I support families too?

Just like children, families need connection, too. Simple things make a difference in supporting family wellbeing.

Warm Greetings

Greet parents warmly—even if it's just a wave

Share Positives

Mention one good thing their child did today.

Provide Resources

Share helpful resources if they're going through a tough time

Information Board

Keep a family wellbeing board with flyers, numbers, and websites

Quickfire Game: "Wellbeing YES or NO!"

Encouraging belly laughs and silly games is definitely a YES! Regular snack and chat breaks also promote wellbeing through connection - they are a YES!
